Artist's Statement

Technically, I am working with R & F oil sticks applied directly, using moistened sponges and dried stiff brushes to move the oil on the canvas or board. I usually apply heat via a heat gun or blow torch.

Most of the female images are made this way - with many layers of different colors of the oil stick; then scratching away to reveal some of the earlier applications. I can’t separate these female images from my personal story - yet they are merely non-permanent images from a particular moment. Though the images appear placid, the spirit is active, even agitated, perhaps frightened unto death. It is hoped the banality will bring safety.

I also work with encaustics. These are experiential in the touch and smell and the response of wax to the human effort. Wax is a lovely way to express the color. The blend of pigment with wax stands and bows. Much of this work is about the ‘not feeling’, or the ‘should be feeling’ or the ‘hope to be feeling’ - thoughts.

From my previous commercial interior design/space planning work, there is a seed of something that is moving below the surface - I am focusing on that growing right now and aspire to ‘no water pot watching’.
